In my post on increasing blog traffic, I promised to periodically share tips on generating traffic. I’ve been reading a great book (which I’ll post a review about soon) on how to get found online. It’s called Inbound Marketing by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah.
Their marketing philosophy is different from the traditional teachings on ways to get your advertising message out to your potential audience/customers. They advocate “stop pushing your message out and start pulling your customers in.” And their marketing techniques teach you how to get found using Google, blogs, and social media.
Their marketing strategy begins with creating valuable content that attracts others to your site and prompts them to remark about your products, information, or services and then link back to your site. Another benefit of valuable content is that it can quickly and easily be spread across social media sites, attracting even more potential customers to your site. So start writing your remarkable content, then begin applying the following tips from Inbound Marketing on top ways to get found online:
Getting Found in the Blogosphere
- Own Your Blog – If you’re a serious mompreneur and are using your blog as a way to make money online, then it’s imperative that you own your blog. By that, I mean that your blog does not include the name of its platform in your URL, for instance: (blog name).blogger.com or (blog name).wordpress.com. What happens with using one of these types of platforms for business is that you are promoting the platform and not your business. It’s recommended that you go with a self-hosted platform, such as WordPress.org, and register a domain name of your choice that identifies your business. This way, you’re building authority for your business alone.
- Write Right! – Writing effective blog posts or articles is key to gaining and maintaining readers. The Inbound Marketing authors recommend that you focus your blog posts on your industry. If you’re in the jewelry business, then write about style and fashion. This can include reviews, how-to articles, or announcements on upcoming events or specials. You can consider mixing things up a bit and provide your readers with a list of links to 5 or 10 other relevant sites or articles that you’ve found to be great resources. Or add a video blog (vlog) of you talking about an industry-related topic. You can also invite others to guest post on your blog. This can save you time and effort as well as expose your blog to a new audience.
- Get SEO Savvy – Most savvy mompreneurs, if not all, have heard of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In regards to SEO, one of the most important parts of your blog post (if you want to get found online) is your post title. Google indexes each individual blog article as its own page. When someone searches on Google for information, Google matches the search entry with all of the pages that are contained in its index. One of the most important items it searches to match the phrase or word entered is the article title. So including the keywords you want to rank number one for is helpful, though not a guarantee your article will rank well. Also turning important keywords and phrases into hyperlinks within the text of your article, linking them to other articles within your blog, can help search engines understand the relevance of the page you are linking to.
Implementing these tips can give you a great start in getting found online. In Parts 2 and 3, we will cover ways to get found in Google and Social Media. Be sure you don’t miss out on these future posts by subscribing to our future updates.
