I’m new to blogging and the whole social media thing. I’m trying to get my home business up and running, but I have no idea where to start! I made some business cards and created a Facebook page, but how do I get the customers?
And she is not alone. There are many other beginning mompreneurs who are struggling with marketing their business and attracting customers. If you can identify, then read on. Here are 5 steps to launching your home business:
Step #1 – Determine Your Target Market
Before you can begin marketing your wares, you need to have a clear plan as to whom you are targeting. Who is best suited for your products or services? Asking yourself the following questions can help you identify your niche:
- Which type of person would benefit most from my products or services?
- Are they local or global?
- What challenges are they experiencing?
- What benefits would they gain from my products or services?
- How can I bring the most value to their lives?
Peter Drucker states that “the aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him [or her] and sells itself.”
Step #2 – Develop Your Marketing Plan
With your ideal market in mind, you can now begin developing your marketing plan. Depending on your comfort level and the products or services you offer, your marketing plan can include both online and offline strategies:
- Listing your website in online business or blog directories
- Writing articles
- Posting flyers in your local community
- Using your car as advertisement
- Creating a Squidoo site
- Creating videos or vlogs
- Giving free presentations in your community
- Social media marketing

Step #3 – Be Committed and Consistent
Remember it takes time to build a successful blog or a home based business. Be consistent and committed to doing what it takes to succeed. Know that it takes time to build your brand and attract your ideal customers. Don’t expect it to happen overnight. Just don’t give up. Keep taking the necessary steps and it will happen.
To help you stay consistent and committed, create a business plan that includes a daily tasklist and schedule. Outline your 1-year, 3-year and 5-year goals for your business. Also outline what tasks you need to complete on a daily basis and prioritize that list. Identify the amount of time you can commit on a daily and weekly basis, and then schedule your tasks accordingly.
Step #4 – Invest in Yourself
Getting started as a mompreneur is a big step, but once you’ve launched your business or blog, don’t stop there. Commit to getting better every day. Devote a set amount of time each day to developing your skills and yourself. This may include reading books on staying motivated, building a business, or books that give you greater insight into your target market. Commit to doing whatever will help your knowledge grow, and help you become a better person and expert in your field.
Step #5 – Manage Your Business
In order for your business to thrive and grow, you have to manage it well. If you plan to be successful as a mompreneur, it’s important that you do income producing activities every day. Establishing a work schedule will help you keep your family as top priority, while ensuring you are consistent and stay on track with your work.
This may mean waking up early, before the kids awake, or staying up a little late after their bedtime. You may also find that you can complete small tasks while the kids eat lunch, play or take a nap. Be sure to include time for yourself. Post your schedule and review it with your family so they can support you in your decision to work from home. By establishing a routine, you begin to treat your work from home more like a business and less like a hobby.
