When I first started blogging, it was for fun and relaxation. I like to write, and I was working full-time and needed a creative outlet. My first blog was an expert blogger’s nite-mare. I had maybe (maybe!) five to ten people actively reading it (you know, my
mom, dad, sisters, and two or three people I’d never met). And I had no idea how to increase traffic to my blog.
I admit, I was one of those people who thought that when I typed the last word and hit submit, my post would be read by hundreds of people who thoroughly enjoyed every word (but were just to awe-struck to comment or subscribe). I had an unrealistic view of what blogging and online marketing was really about.
It wasn’t until I came home full-time that I began to learn more about what it took to have a successful blog and online career. It was then I started following my now Top Ten Blogs and learning from those I considered to be experts.
I first concentrated on setting up my blog correctly – deciding on a design, getting the right plugins, setting up the appropriate widgets, etc. I then studied video marketing, and then setting up a Facebook fan page. I learned about keywords and writing valuable content. I tried to glean every ounce of knowledge from my online mentors.
So with my new-found knowledge, I started writing blog posts more consistently and with more relevant content, and my unique visitors increased while my followers grew to a whopping 50 (and, yes, I was excited about that because 45 of them were not relatives)!
I know, I know. I still needed to increase my blog traffic. So since that time, I have been concentrating on ways to increase traffic to my blog organically and applying what I had previously learned (a very important part of the learning process – that applying part). Now I want to share my journey with you. Come on! Let’s watch this baby grow together!
So here’s what I’m doing now:
- Social Media networking (building relationships on Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
- Submitting articles to article submission sites
- Participating in mom groups
- Publishing ezines
- Supporting and gaining support from blogging tribes
- Other stuff I can’t remember right now…
This is where I’ve (re)started and it has begun to show great promise. Within a short time, my stats have greatly improved and I’ve increased to over 400 followers in some form or another (and I don’t have that many relatives still alive). I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go before I reach my goal. But it’s a good start.
Now that I’ve poured my heart out, it’s your time to share. Some of you reading this are traffic experts and some of you are in a position similar to mine. If you know how to increase blog traffic, tell us the top one or two ways that have worked for you. If you are looking to learn, like me, tell us what your challenges are.
Be sure to stay up-to-date on my future posts about my journey to increase my blog traffic. You may want to subscribe so you don’t miss out.
