For some, meeting new people and gaining friends is an easy task. But building relationships that last can sometimes be more challenging. Whether it’s gaining the trust of a new customer, transitioning an acquaintance into a new friend, or deepening a love relationship, we can sometimes feel ill-equipped to move the relationship forward.
One way to build better relationships is to focus on listening, truly hearing what those in our lives are saying. This means listening not just to the words being spoken, but listening for the essence of what’s being said. What are the emotions behind the words? What does the body language tell us? What words are not being said? By turning off our judgments and refraining from thinking of what we’ll say next, we can hear more than is actually spoken. Then our responses will speak more to the heart of the person with whom we’re conversing.
Have you ever been heard…truly heard? It draws you in to the person who’s listening, making you want to talk with them for hours. Be THAT person for someone else and build better relationships.
