Here’s how I learned what it takes to confidently grow a business…
How It All Began…
I used to play “business woman” and “store” as a child. I collected cash registers and would charge my family members for everyday household items.
My earliest memories were of going to work with my mom and sitting on a spare chair (or under her desk) as she worked. I knew I wanted to do something in business.
That love grew and by the age of 10, I had started four businesses in my neighborhood. I even hired some of the neighborhood kids as employees and paid them their share of the profits.
I loved the sense of freedom and empowerment business ownership provided. I loved the confidence I felt and the warm feeling I got when I was able to help a customer and make them smile. This was what I pictured “work” to be like.
But after college, I lost my care-free attitude and the ambivalence towards risk, and chose instead the safety of a corporate job. It was fine for awhile and I learned a lot, but deep inside I knew I was born for something different.
Deep inside, I harbored the desire to work from home, to be able to experience freedom and to be there for my kids. But what stopped me was the fear of the unknown. Could we really afford to live on just one income until my business took off?
It was after my youngest was born that I decided to make the change. I wanted more time with my kids and to be able to use all of my innate strengths. So I slowly started making plans to leave my job, moving to part-time hours and building up my savings.
It was a one-year plan, but an incident with my kids’ childcare provider changed it all. I knew my place was at home…immediately. So I took a leap of faith, left my corporate career and came home.
It was a challenging journey.
I tried various work at home jobs and business ventures, but it wasn’t until I volunteered for a social media marketing and networking position with an up-and-coming non-profit business that I found my niche. I loved marketing and networking, and I loved the feeling of helping someone else experience success.
This volunteer position led to several referrals by the owner and nine months later, I had a thriving social media and content marketing career. Without her help, I would not have discovered this passion and I would not have so quickly experienced the success that I have. I learned that giving help and receiving help makes both parties succeed.
I decided that I would dedicate my business to helping other working moms make the (often difficult) transition from their corporate job to home. I help new mompreneurs transform their struggling or somewhat successful business into a thriving, profitable career that allows them to be there for their kids.
